Meditation for the Busy Mind

Often you hear that meditation and the use of meditation techniques are ideal for helping a person cope with stress. Stress management is what we all strive for in this crazy world we call life.

However, one problem most face when they begin applying any meditation technique is the idea of "empty your head" or "clear your mind" or "don't think."

Easier said than done, right? Well what if you found out that emptying your mind to achieve a meditation state was not the first and foremost requirement for successful stress management?

Here is a tip to help you achieve enlightenment without driving yourself even further along the road to the loony bin:

Fill your head with everything!

That's right. Often the ideal state of meditation can be arrived at by thinking too much! If you are increasing your stressful feelings with a sense of failure to achieve that empty state of mind, work in reverse and fill it up!

Now right about the time you are thinking, "Great! That's my problem, too much on my mind, I can do this..." realize that there is some structure required to this type of meditation. To effectively apply this stress management technique, choose one object.

The egg is often the suggested object to meditate upon. You visualize the egg, and then think about every aspect of that egg.

Consider the shape of the egg, the size of the egg, if it is brown or white, whether it's fragile or unbreakable. Also allow your mind to travel even further down this path - where did the egg come from? Who is its mother?

Then, as your mind wanders thinking about your egg, move even further (or bigger) away from your egg. Consider egg colors vary, and also human skin tones, too. Want to move even further up the road to stress relief management? Imagine how your egg relates to everything - everything - the universe and beyond. Imagine, too, the very core of that egg, its atoms.

What happens is that as you allow your mind to fill with thought you find you are achieving the ideal stress management state of meditation. Your brain comes to terms with your "in the moment" mind, and works with you on achieving that peacefulness you desire.

You have heard the Zen koan, "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" Stress-reducing, visualization techniques like this method using an egg are just a variation of this type of koan. By allowing your mind to explore one channelled possibility, you will discover you do have the coping skills to use meditation to your advantage and begin a happy, healthy regime of stress reduction though stress management.

Gee, I didn't know I was practicing a technique when I my mind filled up to overflowing as I stared (meditated on) at a single, peaceful object (my "egg") or image of my Lord, or with closed eyes on a loving, secure, warm image and remembrance in my head, evoking the fullness of it in exquisite detail... as my tension eased, my breathing became more relaxed, I was calmed and able to face the stressful caregiver role with greater well-being, strength, patience... Thanks. I enjoyed this article!
